pheas|ant «FEHZ uhnt», noun, plural -ants or (collectively) -ant.
1. a large game bird with brilliant feathers in the male, and long pointed tail feathers, that nests on the ground and flies only short distances. There are various kinds, related to the domestic fowl and the peacock. Pheasants are native to Asia but are now established in many parts of Europe and America.
2. any one of various similar birds, such as the ruffed grouse.
